Senior Health: Blood Pressure

JoeMaine's healthy blood pressure program

I had severe pain in my hips and in order to see an Orthopedic Doctor I had to make a visit to my Primary Doctor in 2020. My Primary wasn't very happy with my blood pressure, was ready to prescribe medication, wanted me to lose some weight, and begin an exercise program. Exercise was impossible with the hip pain, I could work to change my diet, but I really didn't want to start on hypertension prescription drugs. Here's the path I took to lower my blood pressure; you can see how I eliminated my joint pain here.

My blood pressure averaged 152/97 for the first week of my journey towards better health. I wasn't starting in a very good place. Over the next 3 months I reduced my weight by 15 pounds, investigated the more holistic options, but was overwhelmed with the offerings which ranged from naturalistic to bizarre.

I read about products, researched companies, read thousands of reviews and searched for solutions that were manufactured at a trusted facility NOT located in China. Over the next 4 months I dropped another 5 pounds and reduced my readings to 135/86. I've stuck to the "JoeMaine healthy blood pressure" program and have kept the readings consistently under the 135/86. My top 6 products are; an Ayurvedic herbal supplement, CoQ10, Hawthorn Berries, Beet Root, L-Arginine, and Olive Leaf. I've added to and deleted items from this list over the last two years but the core has always been these 6 items. More often than not I'll add Garlic, Ginger, Potassium/Magnesium, and of course a multi-vitamin to the mix. That having been stated...I'm sure that the Krill Oil I take for my joints has also had a positive effect on my blood pressure.

I feel great knowing that I have avoided the prescription path; plus I do generally feel better! I wanted to pass along the results of my journey; the following, edited, information is from a variety of online sources:

  • Divya Mukti Vati is an ancient Ayurvedic herbal supplement for the treatment of high blood pressure.
  • There's evidence that CoQ10 supplements can lower blood pressure.
  • In traditional Chinese medicine, Hawthorn Berry is one of the most commonly recommended foods to help treat high blood pressure.
  • When you consume Beet Root, your body converts the natural nitrate into nitric oxide, which relaxes muscles in blood vessel walls and lowers blood pressure. Researchers verified that drinking Beet Root juice boosts blood levels of nitric oxide and helps reduce blood pressure, according to a review published in the Journal of Nutrition in June 2013. Beet Root juice may also improve symptoms caused by another type of cardiovascular disease -- peripheral artery disease (PAD) -- which reduces blood flow in legs and causes pain during walking.
  • L-Arginine supplements may lower blood pressure. An analysis of 11 studies showed that arginine lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
  • At the end of the eight-week study, the group that took 1,000 milligrams per day of Olive Leaf had dropped their systolic blood pressure (the "top" number) by an average of 11 points.
